Kindergarten

St Andrew’s Chilton Kindergarten is run by a Trust of the two Howick Presbyterian congregations. It is situated behind the church at 11 Vincent Street and has a full day licence to provide pre school education.
It operates five days a week during normal school terms. On Monday and Friday mornings it is open from 9.00 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9.00 a.m. until 3.30 p.m.

The kindergarten aims to offer children a stimulating, values-based educational programme, with plenty of one-on-one interaction. There is a high ratio of teachers to children (1 teacher to 8 children in the mornings and 1 to 5 children in the afternoons.) All teachers are either fully registered or currently working towards their registration.

The outdoor area has been recently refitted. The sandpit area is decorated with murals and the grounds surfaced with safe and colourful Burgess matting. There is a garden and grassed area where the children are encouraged to plant and watch seedlings grow. At the beginning of 2008 extensive work was done to upgrade the building so that the kindergarten could get an All Day licence and offer 20 hours of free Early Childhood Education to children over 3 years of age.

The guiding principles of the Trust Board state that each child is to be valued as an individual and helped towards achieving their potential through an educational environment that fosters a desire to learn and a healthy self-image.
Staff work to build a strong partnership between home and kindergarten by teaching values such as friendship, caring, responsibility and perserverance.
We aim to offer a kindergarten that is a happy, safe and nurturing environment and one in which children can grow strong and confident as they learn to interact with each other.

We are licensed for 40 children and applications are always welcome for the waiting list.
