  1. Available
  2.  Can share from their own experience
  3. Good listener
  4. Can ask good questions
  5. Doesn't know it all
  6. Relies on God
  7. Has a mentor of their own
  8. Knows how to set goals
  9. Encourages and affirms
  10. Prays
  11. Knows his or her limitations - can refer on to experts when required
  12. Is Bible based - God is our best mentor
  13. be transparent
  14. be open to criticism

 

 Mistakes to avoid as a Mentor

  1. Don't think you have to have it all together to be a good mentor
  2. Try not to be a parent , or be too authoritative
  3. Try not to make meetings too long or boring
  4. Don't use the time to air your own troubles - if you need someone to talk to talk to us at the YSG!
  5. don't turn a session into a lecture sermon - try to make it an interactive experience
  6. Don't try to hurry to fix or change people - it's a journeyJ

Suggestions for a mentor

 Make the sessions interesting

  1. Prepare in advance
  2. Try and be long term. Start and end on time
  3. Include food
  4. Interactive - encouraging the mentoree to ask questions and express thoughts
